Being professional vs. being amateur

John August (the script writer of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) gave a lecture at Trinity University in San Antonio where he said this, among other things:

“Professional” has nothing to do with getting paid.

When we say “professional,” I think what we’re really talking about is “professionalism,” which is this whole bundle of expectations about how a person is supposed to act.
