Wear contacts? Please read this…

If you’re into the whole contact lens thing, then you’ll want to check out Scary infection plagues contact lens wearers from the MedBlog. Here’s a (big) snippet:

“Here’s an alarming tidbit from the Food and Drug Administration:

This is to inform you of a recent increase in the number of reports in the United States of a rare but serious fungal infection of the eye in soft contact lens wearers. The infection, a fungal keratitis caused by the Fusarium fungus, may cause vision loss requiring corneal transplants.

Both the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating this situation. At this time, Bausch and Lomb has agreed to stop shipping the ReNu MoistureLoc brand contact lens solution. This Notification will be updated as more information becomes available.

The CDC has received reports of 109 suspected cases of this problem. Nine people reported wearing contact lenses overnight, a no-no. Eight people required cornea transplants.

Please read the full CDC report and a news report from Medical News Today, for more details.

And, if you really like to read, here’s bunch of links from Google News.

Disclaimer: I don’t wear contact lenses, though I know people that do. This post is just for information’s sake, I’ve not verified anything.

  1. Does this problem happen only with ReNu solution? I use JnJ’s cleaning solution, and JnJ’s lenses as well… :-|
Just thinking aloud, should I discontinue using contacts for sometime? JnJ’s not got a press-release or anything of that sort out.

  3. I think they mentioned in one of the articles that while there’s been reports of ReNu, it has happened with other solutions as well. I think it’s best to be careful and follow the advice that they’ve provided in the articles. Obviously, you’ll want to read stuff from ‘reputed’ sites, since it’s the eyes that we’re talking about.

  4. Hmm. Interesting. I see that they have mentioned only about MoistureLoc. B&L has another ReNu product as well. I wonder what this will do to the credibility of the company…
