But first, your regular programming.
Japan and Croatia decided that they didn’t want to score any goals. Croatia missed a penalty and Japan missed a tap-it-in kinda chance. And there were others too but clearly the game was destined for 0-0. The group’s second spot is up for grabs though you have to like Australia or Croatia. I doubt if Japan will beat the Brazilians even if the latter are not playing so well.
Brazil managed to beat Australia 2 – 0. Australia’s strategy of playing defensive football wasn’t the best I think. Adriano scored off a Ronaldo assist (he held up three defenders) and the Brazilians were on their way. Australia had their share of chances (Kewell had a golden one) but they could not find the back of the net. Brazil scored a second through Fred and it was all over. Brazil are through to the second round but they’ve not been impressive.
France finally got on the scoresheet through Thierry Henry and scored again through Vieira, but the linesman and referee were visually impaired because they had too many drinks before the game. The ball was clearly over the line and the Korean goalkeeper was clearly inside the goal, but the officials missed it. I wonder what the fourth official was watching on his TV set. Porn you think?
I didn’t see the whole game, but from reports it seemed like France sat on the 1-0 lead in the second half and the Koreans scored in the final minutes to snatch a point. Scrappy goal but a goal anyway. The Koreans will now like their chances of progressing through to the next round. Switzerland play Togo today and if they beat them, they’ll put themselves on top of the group and in a great position to qualify.
France must be wondering what they have to do to win. Get Saha on I say, speed is a good thing in football.
