Strip Search is not a new movie, it was released a couple of years ago. It’s an HBO original movie and aired a couple of nights ago on HBO here, hence the timely review.
An Arab student is arrested in the US and an American student (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is arrested in China. The Arab student is interrogated by a woman (Glenn Close) and the American by a man (Liu Tsung-Yuan) and they are both being interrogated “for crimes, some of which may not have been committed”.
The movie takes us through both interrogations and is gripping even though most of the dialogues in the interrogations are the same, except by two different sets of characters. Tsung-Yuan is brilliant as the Chinese interrogator. The methods and arguments used by the interrogators in the film are probably similar to the ones in real life and that’s what makes the movie chilling.
The movie’s an interesting look, in the post September 11 world, at what fear can make people do. Do watch it if you’re interested in this sort of stuff.
