The story so far: One group of people is transporting cattle, illegally, or so it was reported, to a slaughterhouse. Another group attacked them and violence broke out. Two people were killed and there were also people who were injured in the violence. The place was also shut down for the last couple of days because curfew had to be clamped in the city.
So, people are struggling to get vegetables, milk, and if they haven’t stocked food, hey, it’s time to crash diet. The worst-hit will be the people who live on daily wages because they don’t have a stock of food in their one-bedroom hut.
So to summarize: To protect cattle, the lives of people were lost, and a whole city’s population was inconvenienced.
Is it wrong to illegally slaughter animals? Absolutely. As it is to take the law into your own hands. According to another report, the Students Islamic Movement of India, VHP, Rama Sena and Hindu Jagran Vedike were the groups that could be involved.
If they were found to be involved, then these groups should be punished. Make the groups also pay compensation to the people who lost their lives, the people who were injured, the city of Mangalore for the damage, etc. Also, make them sweep buses and trains for a month or something.
It defies logic that religion or religious beliefs are used as excuses or reasons to commit violent acts. It also makes me sad.
