The dark side of the festival of light

From today’s cover page story of the Deccan Herald:

Close to a hundred people have suffered eye injuries this Deepavali, and Mubarak Pasha, a 13-year-old boy is one among the unfortunate lot. His right eye was hit by a cracker so badly that doctors at St John’s Hospital, had to remove his eyeball.

And here’s more:

Children who have sustained injuries are mostly from low income groups

Doctors say that most children got unfortunate because of lack of adult supervision when they are lighting firworks

Freak accidents reported – 1) A woman sustained injuries, with glass pieces entering her eye, when a cracker hit her spectacles. 2) A man was hit in the eye by a falling rocket, while he was walking by.

It’s amazing how this happens every year and yet we are unable to stop a needless tragedy from occuring.
