Kabul Express

Afghanistan post September 11 isn’t an easy topic to tackle but Kabul Express does it pretty well.

Two Indian TV journalists, played by Arshad Warsi and John Abraham, come into Afghanistan to interview the Taliban in the aftermath of the collapse of that regime. The movie’s essentially about their experience of meeting a Taliban soldier in Afghanistan.

Even though the topic is serious, humour is used in just the right amounts to ease the tension. Arshad Warsi as the cameraman is easily the best character and is marvelous. John Abraham was okay but maybe mis-cast in the role of a journalist. The actress who played a Reuters reporter was pretty awful. The Afghani driver was convincing as was the Taliban soldier.

The background score, the beautiful but scarred backdrops add to the viewing pleasure. Also, the lack of over-the-top sentimentality and the economy of scenes made for good viewing.

Kabul Express is not a regular Bollywood movie, so if you’re looking for that, I suggest you stay away or watch Dhoom 2 instead.

Go and see it though if you want to watch a thoughtful and moving film about Afghanistan. I’m not much of a Hindi movie person but I enjoyed this movie.

  1. I like your review of ‘Kabul Express’. I recently watched the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Arshad Warsi as usual was amazing and of course John Abraham looked like the hot model he is.
