No longer a gentleman’s game

After the incidents and the controversy of the past week in cricket, can we stop referring to cricket as a gentleman’s game?

You wonder why it was ever called a gentleman’s game with all the incidents of sledging, match-fixing, and other controversies that we’ve seen over the last few years. Cricket has been about winning and not about playing the game, which makes it pretty much like every other professional (or semi-professional) sport.

Love the game if you like, but stop pretending that cricket is something that it clearly is not.

  1. Yup, it has turned ugly because of the attitude a few players and teams show towards the game. As in everything, in cricket too you can find a few gentlemen here and there. I watch cricket for them.
