On reservations for the locals

Cynical politics is an editorial in today’s Herald, which is a response to the notification of the Maharashtra government regarding reservations for locals.

Mumbai is India’s most cosmopolitan city and its economic powerhouse. That position is the result of contributions made by people from all over the country who went there and worked. It is unwise and suicidal to limit the city and the state to itself. If the same policy is followed by other states, the country will be internally segregated in islands of mutual exclusion. In times of increasing divisiveness greater social and economic integration should be the aim of governments. Unfortunately the most leading state has taken a bad and retrograde step, for entirely wrong and unedifying reasons.
